Interview with James Spooner
Interviewer: Bobby Hackney Jr. of Rough Francis
The event’s keynote presenter is cartoonist, documentary filmmaker and tattoo artist James Spooner, whose graphic memoir The High Desert explores the author’s experiences growing up Black and punk in a California desert town in the 1980s. Described by bestselling graphic novelist and former Vermont Cartoonist Laureate Alison Bechdel as “a beautifully drawn story…navigated with exquisite nuance and compassion,” The High Desert brings readers into Spooner’s own experiences in ways that connect to larger, powerful themes about identity and finding one’s place in the world. For the keynote, Spooner will be interviewed live at the Festival by Bobby Hackney Jr. of Burlington’s legendary punk band, Rough Francis.
