1619: Arrival of the First Africans Traveling Exhibit

The Vermont Racial Justice Alliance and Fletcher Free Library are excited to bring back the Hampton History Museum 1619: Arrival of the First Africans Traveling Exhibit. Drawing on the latest research, this exhibit tells the story of the Africans’ home in Angola, how they came to be enslaved aboard a Spanish slave ship San Juan Bautista, the terrible 10,000 nautical mile voyage that brought them to Virginia, and their lives on the farms and plantations in the new colony.

In this sweet and brightly illustrated picture book, Amy Wu must craft a dragon unlike any other to share with her class at school in this unforgettable follow-up to Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao.

Amy loves craft time at school. But when her teacher asks everyone to make their own dragon, Amy feels stuck. Musa’s feeling nervous about his first day of school. He’s not used to being away from home and he doesn’t know any of the other kids in his class. And when he meets classmates Moisés, Mo, and Kevin, Musa isn’t sure they’ll have much in common. The Hampton History Museum in Hampton, Virginia has condensed some of the most powerful chapters from America’s past to share with the public through a series of pop-up exhibits.

The Vermont Racial Justice Alliance contracted with the Hampton History Museum to bring their exhibit, "Toward Freedom" to Burlington for a limited time.

The Fletcher Free Library is honored to host an exhibit from the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County called The Courage to Remember. The exhibit is comprised of 40-panels on the Nazi Holocaust.  The Courage to Remember has been exhibited on six continents and seen by mil

In honor of Juneteenth, art teachers Judy Klima from Edmunds Middle School, and Tina Logan from A.D.L. Middle School collaborated on an art assignment for their middle school students. We wanted our students to merge the importance of this holiday with the rich history and beautiy of Ghanaian textiles.
